PRO SIGN, International Trade Fair for Advertising Techniques and Digital
PrintingThe success of a trade fair depends in no small
part on attracting the right visitors. The results of the latest AUMA (German
exhibition and trade fair committee) survey show that trade fairs are extending
their scope and are increasingly functioning as jobs markets. Pupils, students
and trainees constitute nine percent of the visitors to trade fairs on average.
Encouraged by the experience at VisCom 2001, PRO SIGN - the international trade
fair for advertising techniques and digital printing - will be featuring an
expanded Education Pavilion of 186 m² in Hall 1.1 of the Frankfurt Exhibition
Centre from 14 - 16 November 2002. Admission to this pavilion is free of charge
and it is aimed at all initial and further training institutions and colleges
offering courses in signmaking, media design and design. The purpose of the

MUTOH Europe N.V. announces its new NX-Pro
Toucan large-format colour production inkjet printers for outdoor applications.
This new MUTOH printer product will be an addition to the existing Mutoh
PJ-1304NX 54” sized Albatros solvent-based inkjet printer, of which more than
600 units have been sold in Europe, the Middle East and Africa in three years
time. Using the very latest developments in drop-on-demand piezo inkjet
technology, Mutoh’s Toucan series printers will consist of two models : Toucan
64” (1626 mm) and Toucan 87” (2210 mm). The Toucan 64” is equipped with four
colour channels (C, M, Y, K) with a maximum print width of 1600 mm and a top
printing speed of 37,1 m² per hour. The Toucan 87” offers four/six colour
channels (C, M, Y, K, Lc, Lm), with a print width of 2159 mm and a top speed of
79.1 m² per hour. The machines offer multiple print modes, i.e. a high speed
print mode (360 x 180 dpi), a production print mode (360 x 360 dpi) and a high
quality print mode (360 x 720 dpi). Using extremely durable and reliable
piezo-electric drop-on-demand inkjet heads and specifically developed
high-quality double-density solvent-based inks, Toucan printers create signage
for long-term outdoor application. The MUTOH Toucan solvent-based inks allow
users to print directly onto a wide selection of low-cost uncoated materials,
such as scrim vinyl, PVC adhesive film, banner, backlit, mesh ... Because
Toucan inks are waterproof and highly abrasion and UV–resistant, printed images
can last outdoors for up to three years, without lamination…even on
inexpensive, uncoated materials. Inks are moreover supplied in bulk ink tanks,
which are refillable on the fly and contain two liters per colour, allowing for
large autonomy and unattended printing. See the printers at CeBIT Hannover, Hall 23, Booth B22.

The tradition textile market produced over $43
billion in WW billings last year, apparel textiles made up the largest portion
of that amount at almost 90% of the total, also included in this number are
automotive trimmings and carpets. As little as 15 years ago digital printing of
textiles, compared with paper for the relatively benign office environment, no doubt
looked impossible. The demands of the textile application are extreme. In the
face of such odds, digital textile printing is happening. The traditional valve
jet machines are digital and have been around a long time, but they are
appropriate primarily for large-volume, centralized manufacturing. The newer
digital printing technologies open things up for a wide variety of incremental
applications. Tremendous progress has been made, but there are still many
challenges. However, the opportunities for high-value digital printer
applications are so large that many hardware and chemistry vendors are
investing heavily in textile and textile-related products and systems. I.T.
Strategies defines the present markets of digital textile printing to include
sampling, strike-off, and mass customization. The sampling application requires
printing on both paper and fabrics, close attention to accuracy, and conformity
to the conventional screen printing that will be used for production. Digital
printing can dramatically reduce turnaround time for sampling from six to eight
weeks with traditional technology to perhaps just a few days.

Xerox Engineering Systems (XES) announced that
its X2-TECH color inkjet printer is now available with the industry standard,
AccXES Controller. A new release of XES' AccXES Controller software (v7.5),
combined with the Synergix Scan System, brings increased power to the X2-TECH.
The X2-TECH now delivers the fastest processing time in the industry for both
monochrome and color prints, and has new scan to file capability which enables
two step color copying. The AccXES Controller leads the industry in RIP speed
with a processing engine unmatched by traditional host- or PC-based systems.
AccXES was specifically designed to render complex technical documents with
speed and precision. Unlike other controllers, AccXES does not rely on heavy
operating systems that are costly and system resource intensive. By adding
AccXES v7.5 to the X2-TECH, XES has created an extremely robust solution for
the CAD and engineering/scientific communities— without changing the
established workflow. Regardless of the application (GIS, mechanical CAD, LSI
design), the AccXES Controller handles a larger array of complex files than
competitors. These include the popular file formats: HP-GL, HP-GL/2, HP-RTL, VCGL,
CGM, JPEG, TIFF, and optional Adobe PostScript Level 3 certified for color and
monochrome .pdf file support, and other not-so-common formats. Additionally,
optimized AutoCAD drivers deliver complete color functionality while maximizing
system performance.

This month's tip of the month comes from the
newest employee, Marc Levine, technical manager / sales division Monaco
Systems. Marc joins Monaco from Nur-Macroprinters, where he served as the color
specialist. In large-scale graphics, viewing distances are increased, making
higher print resolution unnecessary and often inappropriate as it can slow the
production cycle considerably. Managing this type of output using ICC workflow
can be difficult. Most spectrophotometers use measuring aperture approximately
3-4mm wide. When using medium- to low-resolution printing devices, dot
structures are very large, making it extremely difficult to capture the correct
data with a small measuring device. Averaging multiple sets of readings can
help overcome this issue. Averaging refers to the process of adding multiple
measurements of the same color together and dividing the sum by the number of
measurements. For example, to average five sets of Lab values together, each
component (L, a, b) of each measurement would be added to the corresponding
component of the other measurements. Each of these component sums would then be
divided by five to produce an average Lab value. This may seem like a lot of
work, but spreadsheet applications should be able to handle the task with ease
with the proper configuration.
