Dear readers,

here you will find something about interesting innovations and news about Large Format Printing.

1)      FESPA Digital complete sell-out

FESPA Digital Printing Europe is the first-pan-European exhibition. The fact that this meeting is perfectly written off, shows, how extraordinarily strong the interest of the industry in such a specialized meeting in digital technologies is. New exhibitors have quickly filled the additional 4400 sqm of hall space announced in October, and the show – which takes place at the RAI Exhibition Centre, Amsterdam, from 16th-18th May 2006 – will present therewith over 162 head issuers on a total area of more than 16.250 sqm of exhibition space. The exhibitor list includes major suppliers such as Agfa, Durst, Esko, Luescher, MacDermid, Mactac, Mimaki, Oce, NUR Europe and Sun Chemical, with the most recent additions including Avery Dennison, DuPont, Ergosoft, Forsttrom, Hollanders, HP, KonicaMinolta, Miller Weldmaster, Nazdar, Onyx, Scitex Vision and VUTEk. Visitors will also have a unique opportunity to meet a plethora of new suppliers to the sector, since over 30 per cent of companies participating in FESPA Digital Printing Europe are first-time exhibitors at a FESPA event. FESPA Digital Printing Europe 2006 will be followed in June 2007 by the main FESPA screen and digital printing exhibition in Berlin. FESPA is also already in discussion with a number of European exhibition venues regarding a FESPA Digital event in 2008, to meet exhibitor demand for a frequent cycle of pan-European digital events to reflect the shorter product lifecycles of digital manufacturers. Visitors can go to www.fespadigital.com for further information about the show, and to register for their free entry badge.

Gandinnovations will debut the newest addition to their product line, the Jeti 3324 UV Roll To Roll printer at both IPEX and ISA. The Jeti 3324 UV RTR head carriage hosts 24 Spectra Print heads, while ink designation is 4 heads per color allowing for 6 color combinations. The Jeti 3324 UV RTR print speed is 650 sq ft per hour in best mode and 1050 sq ft per hour in production mode with 300 dpi. The 600 dpi option print speeds will begin at 350 sq ft per hour in best mode and 650 sq ft per hour in production mode. The Jeti 3324 UV RTR is designed to print on media types such as reinforced vinyl, canvas, paper and virtually any rolled substrates. The Jeti 3324 UV RTR will allow users to print at exceptionally fast speeds without the use of heated mesh plates used to dry solvent inks. The Jeti 3324 UV RTR is available with the 600 dpi option, a recent upgrade on all of Gandinnovations Jeti line of printers used to produce higher resolution images with the speed of a grand-format printer. Also at both show Gandinnovations will exhibit the Jeti 3318. The printing area (3.3m) is the same as the traditional Jeti 3312 but its head carriage host 18 Spectra Print Heads. The ink designation is 3 heads per color allowing for 6 color combinations. The Jeti 3318 print speed is 485 sq ft per hour in best mode and 780 sq ft per hour in production mode. Additionally to be showcased, the Jeti 3150 UV Flatbed workhorse (specifically engineered for faster workflow and multiple media applications) will impress spectators at both IPEX and ISA. The design offers a production table which is a sturdy and flat surface for printing rigid or flexible materials. The operator can clearly see the media as it prints and may make appropriate adjustments, if needed, during production. Operators can adjust and align media with the Jeti’s unique “pop-up pins” and vacuum bed which ensures rigid materials will not move.

4)      Mutoh: Rockhopper 3 Series Printers start shipping

Mutoh Europe has started shipping its latest eco printer family, called Rockhopper 3 series. The new Rockhopper 3 eco-solvent printer series succeeds Mutoh’s award-winning Rockhopper II Eco-Solvent Plus inkjet printer series, of which more than 1700 units have been installed all over Europe since early 2004. Rockhopper 3 is offered in two different models, i.e. 65” and 90”. Printing widths are respectively 64.68” and 88.58”. Rockhopper 3 printers have been specifically tuned for use with Mutoh’s third generation of ecosolvent inks, called Eco-Solvent Ultra. Developed for the Mutoh Rockhopper piezo inkjet heads, the new Eco-Solvent Ultra inks will enable an even better output quality and media compatibility as well as an enhanced speed performance compared to the Eco-Solvent Plus inks. Compared to Rockhopper II printers, Rockhopper 3 incorporates several new features, such as a newly designed unwinder/winder 100 system for optimum media guidance and the possibility to open the machine’s left cover to allow the user to easily perform minimal periodical maintenance. Offering 8 color channels, Rockhopper 3 printers can be set up in speed/autonomy mode (2 x 4 CMYK) or in photo-enhanced mode (CMYK, Lc, Lm). Rockhopper 3 printers incorporate four latest generation 360 nozzle/color piezo-electric drop-on demand inkjet heads. The print heads feature “Dynamic Variable Dot Imaging technology”, which enables the production of multiple and unique ink dots and the possibility to individually adjust the size of ink droplets. The result is finer detail and smoother gradients in highlight areas and crisp colors in the mid-tones and shadows. Ink drop mass range varies from 5.4 ng to 41.5 ng. This feature is particularly interesting for super fine prints up to 1440 dpi. Print resolutions offered are 360 x 360 dpi, 720 x 720 dpi & 1440 x 1440 dpi. Targeted at starting and established small to mid range sign shops with mid volume sign production applications (up to 3000 sqm/year), the Rockhopper 3 prints directly onto (eco-) coated and a wide range of uncoated vinyl and banner materials. Thanks to the excellent drying and drop fixation characteristics of the new Eco-Solvent Ultra inks, all compatible uncoated self-adhesive PVC are printable at 6.5 sqm/h at 720 dpi. Rockhopper 3 application possibilities encompass indoor and outdoor poster printing: point of purchase displays, banners and signage, seasonal and long-term corporate graphics, long-term backlit signage, building and construction announcements, vehicle graphics, durable indoor graphics, POS displays, etc.

14)  Uniform: Two new Inks – ActiveSOL and CitroSOL

With increased environmental concerns when using solvent-based printers, Uniform’s advanced ink chemistry has been formulated to the strictest safety parameters, yet provides superior results across virtually all coated and uncoated materials. With two options available, ActivaSOL and CitroSOL, these inks are both designed to give reliable, durable production, faster drying times and vibrant, color-accurate output. The first ink, Uniform ActivaSOL, is a true solvent product yet has been laboratory tested to ensure that it is totally free of the potentially harmful ketones, cyclohexanone and isophorone. This ink’s chemistry is formulated to key with the substrate and, particularly with non-porous PVC medias, the solvents work by dissolving the material’s surface to provide durable results. Secondly, CitroSOL is Uniform’s ultra low-odor organic solvent ink. Despite operating within the same safety levels as eco-solvent products, CitroSOL incorporates all the advantages of working with full solvents. However, it can be used in wide-format printers without the need for special ventilation, and this makes it ideal for users in smaller premises who want to benefit from solvent-based production. Both of these inks can be used in any printer which is designed, or modified, to accept active solvent products. Uniform’s ActivaSOL and CitroSOL provide durable, brilliant results with an outdoor life of at least two years. The formulation of Uniform’s inks also takes into account the user’s printer and its print-heads.

18)  SEAL Graphics launches high-throughput UV liquid coater

SEAL Graphics, a world leader in image and print finishing solutions, is spearheading a new generation of liquid laminators with the launch of its AquaSEAL 72UV. It is seen as an ideal companion to current generation flatbed printers and for signmakers involved in the production of outdoor displays and vehicle graphics. This new machine is of a flatbed construction and will coat prints and rigid substrates up to 1.76m wide and 12.7mm in thickness at speeds of up to 27 meters per minute. Roll-to-roll finishing is also available as an optional extra. The AS72UV uses a liquid formulation that is instantly cured when it passes under the inbuilt ultra violet lamp. As such, it offers immediate protection to a wide variety of materials including output from inkjet, electrostatic, photographic and dye-sublimation printers, which can then be subjected to further processing if required without further delay. If a second coat is desirable, perhaps for banners or posters in a harsh environment, this can be applied immediately. The liquid has been specifically formulated to meet the extreme demands on outdoor displays and vehicle graphics and is impervious to water, petrol, grease, alcohol, salt spray and detergents.  It exhibits low shrinkage, low edge curl and is non-yellowing.  It is also UV, scratch, scrub and abrasion-resistant and comes in gloss, lustre and matt finishes. The gloss laminate, in particular, shows good anti-graffiti properties. The AS72UV will be of particular benefit on inkjet-produced images because the liquid laminate will not react with the inks, so that offsetting is eliminated. Signmakers printing onto foamex will find that a first coat of liquid laminate will provide a smooth surface onto which inks will adhere better than the original material.

The wide format machines are suitable for companies looking for the ideal system to work alongside wide format inkjet printers, affording greater control, saving time and offering beneficial cost savings. On the consumables side, GBC will show new applications to offer increased value to their customer-base by leveraging the advantages of the newly revised cold laminating films for solvent printers. GBC will show their brand new innovative professional GBC 8556 thermal laminating system, specifically designed for printers and trade laminators. In particular, the GBC 8556 offers a productivity-increase to existing thermal trade finishers, but with the help of tailored business cases GBC can show trade laminators still working with the wet technology how they can increase their profits by converting to the thermal technology. The GBC 8556 offers lamination up to 1.12m wide and 1.42m long which also makes this system perfect for luxury package printing. The 8556 runs at up to a maximum web-speed of 76m per minute and is designed to process a wide range of film including the GBC Speciality films such as the innovative and newly released 7100 Metalized PET, a thermal silver metalized printable polyester film. Furthermore it can process the 8600 Silk OPP film, specifically developed for high speed and wide-format markets. This film provides a silk finish and non-reflective surface. The unique finish is resistant to finger-prints and gives a quality feel to the product. The GBC 8600 Silk offers all the advantages of standard OPP film such as excellent adhesion ensuring consistent quality output. This film is also suitable for further finishing like spot varnish, UV varnish, embossing and foil stamping. Another new development will be the 8300 Scuff-free film, this matte film is three times more durable and scratch-resistant than the GBC 8326 matte film. This film accepts UV-spot coating and creates greater visual impact and accepts both animal- and synthetic based glues, making it ideal for the packaging-industry.
