Dear readers,

here you will find something about interesting innovations and news about Large Format Printing.

1)     ISA International Sign Expo: 11 to 14 April in Las Vegas

The ISA International Sign Expo is a premier trade show serving the sign industry. Sign suppliers and distributors exhibit sign industry products, services and technologies to a vast audience of sign manufacturers. Learning opportunities abound at the show, with educational programs focusing on topics such as graphic design, sign code legislation, business management, sales, marketing and technology. Since the show's debut in 1947, the ISA International Sign Expo has been breaking records in exhibit sales and attendance, growing from a few hundred booths to more than 1,800, serving an audience of more than 22,000. In addition to growing in size, the show's global reach has also expanded throughout the years. Approximately 20% of exhibitors and 17% of attendees travel from outside of the U.S. to the show, a percentage which is growing each year. The enormous popularity of the International Sign Expo mirrors the growth the sign industry itself has experienced over the last 60 years. The advent of digital print imaging has largely contributed to this expansion of the sign industry, which continues to grow through advancements and innovations in digital technology.

19) Grafityp: GEF – New ecological indoor laminate

The name of Grafityp is closely connected with new ecological products for the sign making industry. Apart from plotter vinyls on the basis of polyolefine, Grafityp is now also offering protective laminates on the basis of this group of synthetics. Grafiprint LAM120 matt, LAM130 satin and LAM170 gloss are ecological, soft, transparent films, that come with a permanent acrylic adhesive. 20) Junkers & Müllers: Textile façade for a museum

The Abteiberg museum from Mönchengladbach has temporarily relocated into the currently vacant town theatre under the name “Museum X”. For this purpose, the building’s façade was redesigned: frame constructions measuring 2.5 x 5m each were attached to the old glass façade. These were covered with a fabric that had previously been digitally printed with a washed concrete design. A total surface area of 850 sqm was covered in this way. Junkers & Müllers’ TT Bermuda Ink LS SE was developed in-house specifically for digital printing and is particularly suitable for outdoor use such as this project. The fabric is certified as flame retardant, water proof, soil resistant, can be cut hot or cold, is extremely easy to handle and highly tear resistant. In January, the new façade even survived storm Kyrill without any damage. The fabric was printed on the AJ 1000 printer by Roland using ECO-SOL MAX inks. The façade will be on display in Mönchengladbach’s downtown until November of this year.

21) Black is black with Folex “MOULD-MADE” Fine Art inkjet paper

Folex is a relative latecomer to the fine art paper market, but by bringing to the party its special inkjet ink receptive coating expertise it has struck a rich vein of popularity among the UK’s giclée printers. Thanks to its ability to deliver the perfect black, the coating technology has given the Folex Artist Papers a significant edge over more established rival brands. Folex was prompted to introduce its fine art papers by the success of its artist’s canvas which, in its latest version, has an inkjet coating that is usefully resistant to water splashes and provides a firm key for varnishes. Its first paper offering was 230 gsm, but in response to customer demand, it has now settled on a more substantial 310 gsm, which has the stiffness and textured look of the classic hand-made papers used down the ages for conventional fine art printing. The mould-made Folex Artist Paper is acid-free, with no whitening agents, and so provides the excellent archiving properties essential for giclée work. It can be printed with dye as well as pigmented inks and is compatible with all current large-format piezo and thermal ink jet printer models.

On the occasion of the PMA 07 held at the Las Vegas Convention Center from March 8-11, the Digital Imaging Marketing Association (DIMA) has announced the winners of the 2007 DIMA Digital Printer Shoot-Out Award. The DIMA Award takes place for the 12th year in a row. One of the winners was again the innovative RIP manufacturer from Switzerland. ErgoSoft AG was the winner in two categories at the DIMA competition. Indirectly, the Swiss RIP maker was part of the winning team in three other categories as provider of the high-end RIP. The paper manufacturer Innova Art Ltd from Great Britain relied on the ErgoSoft products when printing samples for the DIMA Award. The DIMA mails a “target file” to the participants who have to send back the results within five working days. Judges who are experts in their field of business will evaluated all prints in categories. The “target file” has very specific areas to judge the neutral gray balance, saturation, shadow detail and quality, overall tonality and detail, highlights and specular highlights, flesh tones, hue shift, and text. Altogether, the Swiss RIP developer has been awarded in the past three years with more than 25 international awards. In many other competitions the ErgoSoft AG was part of the winner team by delivering the high-end RIP software.

Hexis S.A., manufacturer self-adhesive vinyl, received the coveted Prix de l’Ambition jointly awarded by Banque Palatine, La Tribune and HEC Group, recognizing its continued growth performance. La Tribune, one of the leading financial newspapers in France, singled out Hexis amongst numerous medium sized businesses competing for the prize. The company manufactures a wide range of graphic vinyl and digital printing media used for sign making and vehicle markings. Hexis supports efforts aiming at a sustainable development and long term protection of the environment. Thus in 2006 the company invested EUR 400,000 in a high temperature incinerator in order to completely eliminate rejections of solvents used in the production process. They are burnt and only water and small quantities of carbon dioxide are released in the atmosphere. Hexis owns 2 manufacturing sites in the South of France and exports over 40% of its sales in over 40 countries, while enjoying sales of EUR 29 million in 2006.
