Web
Consulting, the digital print consultancy, is conducting a major new global
survey of Wide Format Printing, Imaging and Signmaking throughout 2002. Over
the last year, Web Consulting has been developing much closer relationships
with several new associate consultants and partner organisations in Asia and
North America. The Company expects to formerly announce some of its new
partnerships over the next two months. The 2002 survey will cover all
techniques used for production of signs, prints and other wide format graphics,
including computer vinyl cutting, engraving, digital printing, screen printing,
offset printing and photoimaging techniques. There is particular interest in
the changing dynamics of the industry, as new flatbed printers and UV-curable
systems emerge and compete for their share of the market. End-user research
will be complimented by non-user research (to establish reasons for failure to
invest in WF digital printing), plus dialogue with manufacturers and
distributors in the digital and analog industries, and sizing research
throughout the advertising industry. Today analog still accounts for over 85%
by volume of the wide format market, and has no desire to release its hold!”

During the development of the Sapphire, Tiara and Lyson, our official
ink partner, investigated the concept of using custom colours in place of the
traditional Light Cyan and Light Magenta. As most users of solvent ink printers are providing
outdoor graphics, the need for vibrant colours is paramount. After lengthy
Gamut testing, it was seen that the widest Gamut could be achieved by replacing
the light colours with a true Red and true Blue ink. This new ink set, commercially
available for the first time on the new Mara range of printers is known as the
PentachromeTM set. Using the Pentachrome solvent ink set will allow
you to print previously unachievable colours. The
diagram beside is a comparison of the actual output Gamuts from the Sapphire,
the black model shows the Gamut achieved from CMYK while the white model shows
the Gamut from the PentachromeTM set. It shows a great increase in
colour space with the Pentachrome (physically measured at a 27.58 % improvement
overall and it must be noted that the increase in the "advertising "
red region is more like a 50 % increase.

UK
based large format printer Cestrian, has used its VUTEk UltraVu™ 3300 to print
vehicle wraps for the Network Q Rally, 2001. Printing wraps for 10 courtesy
vehicles in one day, Cestrian and its client VWS utilized the UltraVu's
superior high quality and performance benefits, to produce stunning results,
for a very short deadline. Mark Whitehurst, Production Manager, Cestrian
comments, 'The VWS/Network Q job went like a dream. All we had to do was
reproduce the digital artwork from VWS, so that the VUTEk could read it, and
then send it to the machine. Printed on VWS' own self adhesive vinyl, the end
product was great - It printed them perfectly with excellent color matching.
Once printed, the 22.5 m² wraps were then applied to 10 Vauxhall (Opel/General
Motors) Zafira vans, virtually blanketing each vehicle in a South of England
Ordnance Survey Map. The campaign's objective was to raise awareness of the
Network Q's 400 dealerships throughout the UK - eventually seen by over 200,000
spectators.

Many
painters, photographers, and digital artists believe that the Washington DC
area is a great place in which to be an artist and market their work.
Naturally, to grab the glory in this competitive market, the photographers and
artists must be extremely talented. Because their original work is their
thumbprint on life, they need a way to reproduce it, lest they sell their heart
and soul. Besides, in many cases a first edition print can fetch up to $100.
The artists could spend their money on an in-house color management workflow
that includes ICC profiling software, a colorimeter, a spectrophotometer, and a
loaded computer to reproduce their art. But to young, budding artists, it may
be more cost-effective and convenient to have their work outsourced to a
service bureau. A service bureau will reproduce their artwork at a reasonable
price; guarantee a quick turnaround time; and produce quality work, which means
accurate color from original to print.

Thorey
Gera Textilveredelung GmbH has a high degree of technical know-how. The
certification according to ISO DIN EN 9001 (quality management), 14001
(environmental management) and the validation under eco-audit emphasize this.
In Europe Thorey is leading in the market of curtain finishing industries and
the expansion of operations in the field of technical textiles was very
successful.
3P InkJet Textiles AG has granted Thorey a licence for the approved
3P-finishing. Now the textile industry has the opportunity to prepare the

Canon Europa previewed three new large-format ink
jet color graphics printers; the W7200 and W7250, and the Canon Graphic Color
Printer W2200, which will be made available to the European market in September
2002. Class-leading productivity and
high image resolution are achieved through revolutionary new wide print head
technology. The new Canon W7200, W7250 and W2200 printers, which accommodate
print media of up to A0, A1 and A3+ respectively, incorporate a newly developed
one-inch-wide, high-density print head. Based on Canon's proprietary Bubble Jet
technology, the new print head incorporates 7,680 tiny ink nozzles,1,280 for
each of the six colours, delivering class-leading print speeds of 2 minutes per
page (A0 size/fast mode), 1.5 minutes per page (A1 size/fast mode) and 6 pages
per minute (A3 size/fast mode) for the W7200, W7250 and W2200, respectively.
Canon's
new large-format printer lineup employs a six-colour printing process,
incorporating: cyan, magenta, yellow, black and one-sixth density photo cyan
and photo magenta-for improved color precision, greater depth and finer tone
diffusion. The systems also ensure the precise delivery of microscopic droplets
of ink that are consistent in shape, size and density, making photo-quality
high-resolution printout possible.
The
devices have high-capacity ink cartridges for each colour. These continuously monitor and record
remaining ink levels. Users can therefore manage ink usage and eliminate costly
interruptions to large print jobs for greater efficiency and higher
productivity.
