According to Web Consulting’s latest report, “Flatbed Inkjet Printing 2005”, worldwide unit sales of high-end and mid-range flatbed inkjet printers in 2004 grew by 82 percent over 2003 to reach 650 unit sales in the year. The report also forecasts ongoing growth in these sectors, plus the rapid emergence through 2005 of a significant new product category in low-cost flatbed inkjet devices. Web Consulting reports that UV-curable inkjet inks have become dominant in flatbed inkjet printing, and Web Consulting predicts that this trend will continue. During 2004 the major winners in terms of market share were Durst, VUTEk, and NUR. Durst and VUTEk both won market share by very aggressive pricing with new models in the mid-range sector, whilst NUR was “catching up on market share” after launching its Tempo product later than its competitors. Inca also grew market share, and remains the leading provider of the premium high productivity platforms. Web Consulting’s 100-page “Flatbed Inkjet printing 2005” report discusses the market development and emerging manufacturers of equipment and ink in more detail, and provides forecasts and analysis: “The next phase of UV flatbed growth will be into industrial applications, and we believe that Asian manufacturers will become strong players in some of these sectors.”

Inkjet is being considered for a wide range of manufacturing applications within the electronics, bio-medical, automotive, product decoration industries, and more. Compared with current manufacturing processes, inkjet promises significant improvements in production flexibility, such as the ability to integrate outsourced processes directly into manufacturing lines; dispense a wide range of decorative or functional materials; and work directly on components, parts or on much cheaper substrates than possible with current technologies. This symposium will focus on the commercialization of inkjet as a manufacturing process. A wide range of experts will describe the processes and products they are commercializing, from a fundamental component level through to final products. They will describe how inkjet has the potential to offer substantial financial benefits to manufacturers or enables new levels of product performance to be reached. Full details of this event, on-line registration and hotel details, plus the Ink Jet Academy and Ink Jet Developers Conference 2005 are available on the website. The symposium runs from 18 to 19 April 2005.
