Actual News about Large Format Printing

A free of charge information service

Publishing Company: CREACT, Spain; editor in chief: Susanne Aschoff

Friday, 23. April 2004

Dear readers,

in just a few days’ time, drupa in Düsseldorf, acclaimed worldwide as the Olympics for the print and media industry, will open its doors. From 6 to 19 May, a number of 1,862 exhibitors from 52 countries will showcase the latest in print, publishing and converting technologies. With more than 160,000 square meters of exhibition space taken up, the 17 halls of the Düsseldorf Trade Fair Center are fully booked. Suppliers, especially German manufacturers of printing and paper technologies as well as printing materials and inks, are counting on receiving significant impetus for domestic and international business from the print media fair.

As global players and small, innovative companies take the floor, the complete global range of products and services for prepress, print, paper converting, book binding and packaging production can be surveyed at Düsseldorf. Printing and paper technologies recorded promising economic signals at the beginning of the year. The paper industry as well as the paper, pulp and plastic processing industry rang in drupa year 2004 on an upbeat note: Printing paper – the largest segment of the paper industry, boasting 48 percent of sales – have recorded a 4.4-percent increment in sales figures for the first two months of 2004, pointed out the German Pulp and Paper Association. For all the optimism that suppliers brought with them into 2004, German printing houses continue to keep a tight hold on the purse strings. Nevertheless, drupa brings together IT, iron & steel to form a symbiosis – impressive presses and converting machinery are as much a feature of the 17 exhibition halls as computer workstations. Digital workflows and automation are set to be the hottest topics at drupa 2004. To help the 370,000 anticipated visitors find their bearings, the organizers have grouped the 1,862 exhibitors under product and/or thematic categories.

1) Mutoh: Direct Heater upgrade kit

The Belgium-based large format printer manufacturer Mutoh recently introduced a field upgrade kit for existing Rockhopper I series printer users. This field upgrade kit will enable first-generation Rockhopper I users – currently working with Mutoh Eco-Solvent inks in combination with eco-solvent-tuned coated media – to benefit from the possibility of printing directly onto a wider range of standard available uncoated PVC and scrim banner media, in combination with Mutoh’s new Eco-Solvent Plus inks. The first-generation Rockhopper I printers were built with a pre-heater and a post-heater (or dryer). The transition from Eco-Solvent ink to Eco-Solvent Plus inks on a Rockhopper I printer is possible without any machine modification. Users can do it “on the fly” or immediately via a cleaning routine. First-generation Rockhopper I printers with incorporated pre/post heater elements and loaded with Eco-Solvent Plus inks will offer compatibility with a limited selection of uncoated media. Tests with this combination indicated that optimum compatibility with a wider range of uncoated media could be realized by substituting the pre heater by a newly developed heating element just under the print head. This special heating element Mutoh calls it Fixer or Direct Heater. Visit Mutoh at drupa in hall 7, booth A20.

2) VUTEk: New flatbed printing technique

VUTEk has launched a new glass printing capability for its PressVu UV products. The revolutionary high performance VUTEk technology provides excellent adhesion (4b-5b ASTM Method D3359B) to glass, for a host of new applications and profitable market opportunities with its PressVu UV, flatbed/flexible products. With the use of a new hand applied optically clear primer, treated glass can be fed through the PressVu UV for the printing of high quality graphics. Without discoloring the glass, the new primer provides excellent resistance to marking and wearing, and allows the PressVu UV inks to adhere to substrates that other UV inks find difficult. The PressVu UV series has redefined the value of versatility by enabling changeover from rigid to flexible substrates in minutes. The result is an industrial-strength flatbed printer that transforms short-run jobs from time-consuming, costly propositions into viable, efficient, and lucrative business opportunities. Visit VUTEk at drupa in hall 5, booth C18.
