Friday, 1. July 2005

Dear readers,

Here you will find something about interesting innovations and news about Large Format Printing.

1) FESPA 2005: Exhibitors hail FESPA 2005 as an international success

With official statistics now available, the organisers of FESPA 2005 have confirmed that a record 121 different countries were represented from visitors to the event, reflecting FESPA’s unrivalled standing as the premier exhibition for the global digital/screen and large format markets. The exhibition welcomed over 60% of its visitors from outside of Germany. 53% of visitors were from other European countries, whilst 9% visited the event from other continents. Once again, FESPA lived up to the expectations of the exhibitors. Reports from many of the 532 companies, who between them covered over 27,500 sqm of stand space, cited both the high volume and decision-making calibre of visitors to be instrumental in the success of the event for them. As the first FESPA exhibition to be organised by a specialist in-house team, Frazer Chesterman is naturally upbeat about the overall success of FESPA 2005. Importantly, Chesterman sees the accomplishments in Munich as paving the way for the Association’s latest initiative– FESPA Digital Printing Europe 2006 - scheduled to take place at the RAI in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from 16 – 18th May next year. Comments Chesterman, “The FESPA team are absolutely thrilled with the resounding success that companies once again encountered at FESPA. Clearly the results demonstrate FESPA’s 40 years experience in running successful events and our continued commitment to the interests of both exhibitors and visitors to our shows. Based on feedback from exhibitors to FESPA 2005, the event is clearly proven as the premier international event in which to generate business in this sector.”

2) Scitex Vision: Wide Format Technology in Hongkong

Hong Kong-based Standard Chan continues to put its faith in Scitex Vision large format digital inkjet technology as it targets China as a growth market with unprecedented potential. A pioneer in producing award-winning advertising and display print for nearly three decades now, Standard Chan’s authoritative blend of innovation and traditional craftsmanship has earned the company a deserved reputation for exceptional quality and service. Standard Chan was delighted to be the first company in Hong Kong (in 2004) to showcase the extra speed and color quality delivered by the Scitex Vision TURBOjet. The Scitex Vision TURBOjet wide-format inkjet printer has been specifically developed to meet the exacting requirements of the display and large format sector. The mainstay of Standard Chan business is in wide format billboards and what Tony Chan describes as ‘transit media’, such as the McDonalds ad, being used on over 40 buses around Hong Kong central. “With five metres width and no constraint in length other than how the material rolls are supplied, the Scitex Vision XLjet is exceptional for wide format billboards whilst the speed of the Scitex Vision TURBOjet is ideal for large volume output for use on buses or trams or for display posters, like the DHL job, used in the underground stations.” The huge DHL poster shown came in 800 different sections, printed off the Scitex Vision TURBOjet, as compared to the 15-piece McDonalds bus ad. We view Scitex Vision almost as partners with respect to their continued investment in technological advances that help drive the market sector in which we operate,” notes Chan, “and it is a definite advantage to us that Scitex Vision’s Asian headquarters is also based here in Hong Kong.”

4) Mutoh introduced Cobra 100uv

At the FESPA show, Mutoh unveiled a new 100” wide-format inkjet printer, the Cobra 100uv flatbed and Roll-to-Roll Inkjet Printer with UV-Curable Inks. Designed specifically to accommodate the needs of high-volume industrial operations or print environments, Cobra 100uv produces quality prints with highly saturated colors at resolutions up to 1440 dpi. The new printer accommodates media widths up to 2540 mm (100 inches) wide. This advanced system is the result of collaborative effort between Mutoh Europe nv and Agfa Gevaert. Cobra 100uv will print on rigid as well as on roll media at speeds up to 100 qm/h. “Cobra 100uv is the first tangible result of the joint development efforts of Mutoh Europe’s and Agfa’s R&D group”, says Arthur Vanhoutte, Mutoh Europe’s Managing Director. “Cobra 100uv signifies Mutoh’s entry into the high-end industrial inkjet market. It will also be the first UV-technology based inkjet product in our portfolio of wide-format piezo inkjet printers”. Cobra 100uv’s shuttling printing system provides uninterrupted operation for maximum productivity in industrial environments. The combination of precision print heads and the new UV-curable Cobra inks offer exceptional color quality and excellent scratch resistance on a wide range of flexible and rigid media, e.g. coated and uncoated film, paper, frontlit & backlit films, canvas, aluminium plates, screen printing cardboard, foam PVC. One of the patented features incorporated in the Cobra 100uv is the “Controlled Ink Supply System”, which conditions the ink. This closed loop ink circuit enables degassing of the ink through continuous circulation, eliminating air bubbles in the ink chamber that could interfere with the print head. It also controls the temperature and thus the viscosity of the ink, which contributes to more reliable, uniform drops when they are projected onto the media. Cobra 100uv inks offer optimal adhesion and color durability on a wide range of substrates.
