Dear readers,

here you will find something about interesting innovations and news about Large Format Printing.

1)     viscom düsseldorf 2011: Planning in full swing

Speakers’ Corner, Textile or LED Summit, Digital Signage News and Lunch & Learn: Some three months before the start of viscom, plans for the International Trade Fair for Visual Communication, Technology and Design are becoming more concrete everyday. The number of registered exhibitors is growing as well. More than 80 percent of the planned space is already booked. Approximately 350 exhibitors are expected at viscom in Düsseldorf. As in previous years, trade fair organizer Reed Exhibitions does not only count on a comprehensive range of products and services to be presented by the companies from the different segments of the industry, but also on the appropriate supporting program. “Visitors may expect not merely new content, there are also plans for new ways of presentation”, reveals viscom Director Petra Lassahn. “As an open forum or in combination with their lunch break – our comprehensive offer which comes in many different forms enables visitors to select the presentations they want to attend according to their special interest and time schedule.“ The coming viscom will take place from 13 to 15 October 2011 in Düsseldorf, Germany.

2)     FESPA Digital 2011: The unstoppable digital market evolution

The unstoppable digital evolution of the wide-format imaging marketplace was clear for all to see at FESPA Digital 2011 and FESPA Fabric 2011 in Hamburg. The combined shows attracted a record-breaking audience of over 13000 individual visitors. FESPA Managing Director Neil Felton comments: “When the doors opened on Tuesday, the enthusiasm of the hundreds of printers massed in the Messe atrium was palpable. Visitors from overseas did suffer some significant travel disruption on Day 2, resulting from the six-hour closure of Hamburg Airport due to the ash cloud from the Grímsvötn volcano. Clearly though, this did not dampen an amazing, truly international event that has exceeded even our most optimistic expectations.” Exhibitors were universally positive about the volume, quality and international mix of visitors. German printers represented around 45% of the visitor base, followed by particularly strong attendance from the UK, Benelux, Scandinavia, Italy and France. Eastern European markets including Poland, the Czech Republic and Russia were well represented too, and significant visitor delegations from more distant growth markets such as Turkey, India, Brazil and China also contributed strongly to the global profile of the event.

4)     Agfa Graphics: Potential of its new :M-Press Leopard

Following its official launch, Agfa Graphics has now released full details at FESPA Digital 2011 of its new :M-Press Leopard which is targeted at the growing numbers of users who want the speed and quality of offset litho and screen-printing but with the convenience of a wide-format inkjet platform. The :M-Press Leopard is designed to target the mid-sized print service provider whose output requirements sit in the bracket of 200,000 to 500,000 qm of print per year. Agfa’s advanced shuttle design is incorporated into the :M-Press Leopard and this utilizes its established UPH 2 (Universal Print Head) technology that incorporates greyscale variable droplet technology which results in fewer passes being required to achieve the required quality. Its drop sizes range from 10 picoliter through to a maximum of 26 picoliters. Using Agfa’s Wave Form and ink optimization capabilities, the volume of the base sub-droplet is controlled to generate the finest and most accurate output. This feature negates the requirement for additional colors beyond CMYK, thus reducing overall ink costs, and smooth highlights, sharp text and vivid solid colors can be produced without noise or grain. With a maximum print size of 1.6m x 2.6m, the Agfa :M-Press Leopard is geared for fast job change-over and extremely high output quality, suitable for even the closest viewing. It can work with flexible and rigid materials up to 5cm in thickness. Maximum print speeds for the Agfa :M-Press Leopard are 483 qm/h and, even in photographic quality mode, the machine achieves 283 qm/h.

The textiles from Junkers & Müllers (JM Technical Textiles) were represented by various companies at the FESPA Digital in Hamburg. This allowed the company to successfully introduce specialized products for dye sublimation print. Apart from the extensive program of Mediatex textiles for digital printing with water based, solvent, HP latex and UV hardened inks, Junkers & Müllers has developed a completely new product range for dye sublimation print. A magnet for visitors was the product "Mediatex Subli Lightbox" from the textile range for dye sublimation print. This is a luminous textile with a double coating on the reverse, which features good transparency because of its excellent refraction of light. Further highlights in the dye sublimination print range were the materials Mediatex OekoTex Display FR, Mediatex Subli Banner FR, as well as Mediatex Advanced BeachFlag, a banner and flag material, which is characterised by extremely tough product construction and a hundred percent print through.

28) Asphalt Art: Campaign directly broken up on the stall

Asphalt Art with its innovative products for floor marketing can give a positive summary for the FESPA Digital 2011. A long list with contact from 38 countries is the result in numbers. Worldwide the potential buyers were fascinated from the possibility to place advertisements on the floor even under the worst circumstances: outdoor – without lamination – on most difficult ground. Impressing for the visitors of the stall was the flat screen where a movie showed the application of Asphalt Art at a cycle race and at a DTM race. Many people said that it is unbelievable or that they can hardly believe that a foil can stick on a floor so good that even a racing car can drive over it. One visitor was made happy immediately by the Asphalt Art team. He arrived with completely different interests, but he found on the stall the solution for one of his problems. In a parking structure he had to mark 100 parking spaces for the company “Energiebau” in Cologne. He saw the product on the FESPA Digital and immediately ordered a roll that was printed the day after and was applied in the parking structure during the exhibition. Who believes that exhibition contacts show their effect only after a certain time, was taught something better.

31) Fujifilm: Data Image Group invests in Inca Onset S40

Leicester-based Data Image Group is one of the first printers in the UK to invest in an Inca Onset S40 from Fujifilm. Data Image Group signed on the dotted line for the wide-format UV inkjet printer at FESPA Digital 2011. The Inca S40 will join a Fujifilm Acuity Advance HS HD3545 at the cutting-edge printers later this month. “We chose to partner with Fujifilm and invest in the Onset because it is a well-built printer that produces exceptionally high-quality print”, explains Alan Farfort, director at Data Image Group. “We saw fantastic quality print samples from the Onset 40 and once we conducted tests we realized the potential it had to move our business forward. It can produce up to 470 square meters of print per hour and the configuration of the print heads means the speed and quality of output is phenomenal. We had researched the market for 18 months to find a machine like this and tests show it takes just two and a half hours to print what it takes two of our other machines 40 hours to do. This is a major increase in productivity for us, and it is proving very exciting to be one of the first printers in the UK to purchase an Onset S40!”
