Dear readers,

here you will find something about interesting innovations and news about Large Format Printing.

1)     photokina 2006: Trends in professional printing

At photokina in Cologne, the range of products and systems for large-format and fine art printing has been expanding for several years. Nearly some suppliers of this market segment will once again present the latest applications at the World of Imaging. In discussion forums and professional symposia, experts will give presentations on current market developments and address industry trends from the perspectives of theory and practice. The following is a first overview of the themes and developments that will be e.g. at the center of attention at photokina 2006. Until a few years ago, pigment-based inks with high UV stability were found only in the realm of superwide inkjets that required high investment volumes. But many manufacturers have now defined a new market: They offer solvent machines with printing widths between about 1.30 and 2.50 m that are operated with environmentally friendly or mild/low-solvent inks and selected uncoated media. Because of the low investment requirements, these machines can also be sold to companies with low print volumes, and there is a huge demand for them. Inkjet printers for UV-hardening inks have now become firmly established on the market. Initial problems with the service life of flexible media have been eliminated; some manufacturers are even offering machines for pure web printing. But the more common form of UV inkjets are the "combination printers" that can process rolls and rigid media. In addition to the printing on paper and films, textile printing, especially of flags and banners but also of displays, is becoming increasingly important. It is not uncommon for "soft signage" printers to be based on existing platforms that are retrofitted and extended with textile inks. Increasingly, however, machines specially designed for textile printing are coming onto the market.

3)     EFI: ImageBox uses VUTEk printers

Australia-based full-service graphics printer, ImageBox, has used its VUTEk UltraVU 3360 and PressVu UV-200/600 printers from EFI to produce high quality large format graphics for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, held in Melbourne. Installed in some of Melbourne’s busiest tourist areas, the job included over 500 square meters of window graphics and signage. ImageBox has designed it to create maximum awareness of the games throughout the city. The VUTEk flatbed printer the company also used to print sponsorship signage and large graphic murals direct to rigid boards. These graphics they have installed at Melbourne’s International Shooting Center, Exhibition Center and airport. ImageBox also used its UltraVu 3360 solvent based printer to produce a building wrap for Melbourne’s high profile visitor center, located in Federation Square. Printed in one-way vision self adhesive vinyl, the visitor center wrap was printed in panels, covering two full sides of the building.

4)     Mutoh: Publi-Lettres expands production capacity

The wide format printing and signmaking company Publi-Lettres, Longwy/France, has recently installed – being the first in France – a Mutoh Phoenix S 3.3 meter super wide 6 color solvent printer in its premises. The system was sold via Mutoh Europe’s authorized reseller Intersoft s.a.r.l. Publi-Lettres is using the Mutoh Phoenix S printer specifically for the production of full-color truck banners. The pictures are being printed in landscape onto 3.3-meter wide 900g/sqm banner, with a visible height of 2.7 m to allow for confection. Wide-format full-color print for vehicles is a booming business, the General Manager of Publi-Lettres explained. A delivery vehicle driving frequently in town is seen 7000 times per hour, or about 14 million times a year, and we have decorated more than 800 vehicles, he continues. With the Phoenix S 6 color printer they can now produce a truck banner in one go at full height, without need for welding the banner afterwards. Publi-Lettres have chosen for the Mutoh Phoenix S printer for several reasons. They had – beside others – a look for a printer offering a print width over 2.5 m to extend their production volume of outdoor prints. The Phoenix S printer immediately caught their interest since it incorporates the same head technology that is used in the Toucan 4 color solvent printer.

14) Qualimage: Outdoor backlit paper for solvent inks

The 904 Scrolljet 175 gsm is designed specifically for solvent inks and lends itself to the printing of advertising panels for scrolling light boxes. The technical specialists from Qualimage have successfully created a paper with a wet-strength base and a formation that enhances the stiffness of the sheet. With these properties the highest stability during display and rotation can be achieved even when variable temperatures and humidity abound. Furthermore, the grade has a uniform formation, which realizes shine-through properties. The grade is finished with a porous coating in order to allow certain penetration of the ink into the body of the paper to achieve vibrant colors in backlit and frontlit situations. The combination of the open structure of the paper and an optimized controlled penetration of the ink into the coating makes for fast print speeds. The grand format solvent printers are the primary target group for this excellent new product. The grade is sold in standard inkjet widths and in oversize widths up to 310 cm to match all typical national widths of backlit systems. Qualimage has developed a coating so that Scrolljet is also suitable for UV curable inks, simultaneously this offers a universality and the flexibility to make creative concepts come alive.

16) Mehler Texnologies: The “Wall” of the Stadium

Printed on banner material produced by Mehler Texnologies, the down-sized replica of the Berlin Olympic Stadium was the centerpiece of the adidas World of Football. As the main sponsor of the FIFA World Cup 2006, the sports items manufacturer used the Platz der Republik, the large square in front of the German Parliament building, the Reichstag, to erect the arena and thus to offer football enthusiasts an unforgettable experience. In this way, roughly 10,000 spectators had the opportunity to enjoy the public viewing of every match in an atmosphere just like being in a stadium. To create a detailed, true replica of the Olympic Stadium, the steel scaffolding of the mini-arena was given an outer covering made of banner material manufactured by Mehler Texnologies. The enterprise contracted to carry out the work, P.O.S. Hauptmannl, decided to use VALMEX ® FRONTLIT II FR. The façade of the stadium was digitally printed onto 114 elements with a banner width of 3 meters and a height of 15.2 meters. The two towers and the staircases were also added. In this way an impressive total surface area of 6870 sqm was created. A further 1,800 sqm of VALMEX® AIRTEX magic FR digitally printed were used to evoke the best possible stadium atmosphere on the inside of the arena. Surrounding the entire area, the organizers commissioned the erection of a fence with a length of 2.2 kilometers. This was also completely digitally printed. The material used was VALMEX® mesh FR, the entire surface area amounted to 8.500 sqm. Large-scale projects, like the replication of the Berlin Olympic Stadium, not only require that the banner material used allows a brilliant printed image but also place high demands in respective of the weather resistance and strength of the material and the workmanship.
