4)     Inca: New bi-directional printing technique

Inca has introduced an innovative bi-directional printing technique that has boosted the production speed of its Onset flatbed UV inkjet printer by up to 25%. Using the new bi-directional mode the automated Inca Onset handles print sizes up to 3.2 x 1.5m at a production throughput of up to 600 sqm/hr. In pure print terms, this equates to a speed of 1,000 sqm/hr. Large format inkjet printers traditionally build an image by scanning printheads back and forth across the substrate. This creates a 'lawn' banding effect when printing in both directions (bi-directional). Banding can be caused by ink droplet placement, the shape of the drops and the differences caused by curing in each direction of printing. However, because the printing method is different on an Onset, this structural banding is not an issue due to its advanced engineering and design. The latest bi-di upgrade improves performance from 500 to 600 sqm/hr, whilst giving users the confidence that they can maintain top quality results. Inca's new Bi-directional printing feature is already being fully utilised on customer installed Onsets and is now available as standard on new Onset machines.

5)     ONYX Graphics releases ONYX Workflow Software Version 7.2

ONYX Graphics, Inc. has released Version 7.2 for its popular workflow software packages: ONYX ProductionHouse, ONYX PosterShop and ONYX RIPCenter. The new features in Version 7.2 are designed to boost productivity, help realize additional cost savings, and ensure consistent output quality. All new Version 7.2 software packages include a new dot pattern, “FDRP Enhanced”, a new error diffusion dot pattern that produces finer, smoother output, especially in printers with “fixed-dot” modes. The results are most apparent in critical areas such as flesh tones and solid fill areas. FDRP Enhanced enables users to print at lower resolutions, thereby using less ink without compromising image quality. Several enhancements have been included in Version 7.2 to continue to meet the high quality demands of ONYX users, such as More Robust and Accurate Color with improvements in the ONYX ICC Profile Generator, New Spot Color Matching Capabilities including for HP Professional PANTONE® emulation technology and integrated RAL and HKS color libraries, fixes for PDF transparencies and improved cut contour speed and accuracy. ONYX Graphics workflow software Version 7.2 is now available at no charge for download by registered licensees of Version 7.0 and 7.1 from www.onyxgfx.net. To upgrade from a previous version or to purchase a new license, please contact a local ONYX reseller on www.onyxgfx.com/Locate a Reseller

PriceView allows user to estimate a selling price thanks to an intelligent comparison of the data with the already existing jobs. To simulate a selling price simply fill in the Print and Media dimensions, this information will be used to calculate the ink costs and will take into account the waste of paper that may occur when the job is printed. The user can set minimum margins, client discounts and other incremental costs. CostView 2.0 is positioned to be the ultimate dashboard for a manager sensitive to production costs. With this module user can calculate all costs pertaining to a job: printing costs, finishing, shipping, machine amortization or other overhead costs. 8)     Mimaki: New innovative SS21 white solvent ink for JV33 series

Mimaki Engineering Co., Ltd is pleased to announce its new white solvent ink to be used in its JV33 series of wide format solvent inkjet printers. The whiteness of the ink has been decisively improved, to significantly widen the design possibilities for both outdoor and indoor graphics. When printing white ink as an under layer for full color on transparent media the media has to be re-fed in order to print the color on top of the white layer. This often leads to registration problems. To eliminate such Mimaki has developed “White ink overlay printing” which allows simultaneous white and full color printing. Mimaki’s new feature for the JV33 enables accurate output of vivid full color graphics with white under layer. While the new white ink retains the advantageous features of SS21 inks such as fast drying and a wide color gamut, the whiteness and opacity are decisively improved. This new white ink enables simultaneous high speed printing of white and color thereby facilitating many more design effects. In addition the pigments in the white ink have been improved in order to prevent a shift of whiteness due to sedimentation. White ink, which uses heavy inorganic pigments such as sand, is liable to sedimentation. When this occurs only the upper part of the fluid is extracted, resulting in color shift. The new white SS21 ink reduces this undesired effect considerably and enables stable and dense white printing.

10) Sihl: New SuperDry Display Film 165

At photokina Sihl introduces an opaque white polyester film with a well-known, microporous SuperDry coating. The SuperDry Display Film 165 (glossy 3473) is characterised by a combination of excellent photographic quality and outstanding high-gloss effect. Because of its rigidity and stiffness, the robust film guarantees perfect flatness even under different climatic conditions and is therefore very easy to use. Its perfect printer compatibility, easy processing and surface structure make this a perfect inkjet product. The polyester film (165 µm + 220 g/sqm) is convincing not only in terms of photo reproduction but also with regard to processing and versatility. One of the reasons is the stiffness of the polyester film, which offers optimum flatness and tear resistance. Because of its dimensional stability and resistance to moisture and temperature as well as its mechanical robustness – preferably 30-65% relative humidity and 10-30 °C – this material is perfect for all areas of high-end photo and graphic reproduction. It also has good laminating properties (hot or cold) for longer-term use. Sihl SuperDry Display Film 165 (glossy 3473) is available in reels in lengths of 20 m and in the widths 17", 24", 36", 42", 44" and 50".

11) JM: More brilliant colours with Mediatex Lightbox

Junkers & Müllers developed the material especially to meet the specific demands made on printed images used in backlit applications. The key differentiator of this fabric is its special coating. However, the macro-porous coating of Mediatex Lightbox actually intensifies the brilliance of the colours. When light reaches the fabric it initially gets absorbed and then diffused through to the other side. This results in more brilliant colours while black remains truly black and does not turn grey. The fabric is particularly suitable for department store systems, city lightboxes and all backlit showcases, in addition to the traditional exhibition stands. The flexible material is extremely easy to process and does not display any kinking or white brittle – a characteristic extremely important for backlits. Mediatex Lightbox is available in widths of up to 2 metres and can be printed with all solvent and uv inks. Junkers & Müllers will be presenting the fabric at viscom in Paris where the textile manufacturer has a joint stand together with Regulus, Aslan and Arkwright. Together, the four companies can offer nearly the entire spectrum of digitally printable media for the advertising industry, from foils and paper through to textiles.

12) Neschen expands interior design range

The Solvoprint Wallpaper Painter’s Canvas is the latest product in the portfolio and is ideal for images from the world of painting. The irregular texture of the woven textile backing looks deceptively like a canvas painted thickly with oil paints. The canvas medium can be mounted in a stretcher frame and is therefore ideal for art reproductions. The Solvoprint Wallpaper Painter’s Canvas has been specially developed for printing with (eco) solvent and UV curing inks. The printing quality is very good and colours are strong and bright. It is also flame retardant (according to DIN 4102 B1). Worldwide, Neschen supplies printable, coated and enhanced sheet media, such as plastic and paper foils, but also textiles for printing service providers. Architects, designers, photographers, interior designers and advertising agencies can draw on a vast range of products for each and every application.

Xaar is pleased to announce that the Xaar 1001 printhead is a recipient of the PIA/GATF Intertech Technology Award for 2008. The InterTech Technology Awards honor the development of technologies predicted to have a major impact on the graphic arts and related industries. The Xaar 1001 is the ideal inkjet printhead for commercial print and packaging. Designed for high-speed, single-pass applications, the Xaar 1001 head is at the heart of a number of innovative UV inkjet presses. It delivers excellent drop formation and drop placement accuracy with outstanding operational durability. The head's unique XaarDOT technology allows variable-sized drops to be produced, giving users the ability to select drop size depending upon the application. Fine drops give smooth tones and sharp-edged text, while larger drops ensure good ink coverage at maximum print speed. The 1001 printhead also incorporates Xaar's new HSS head technology, which delivers "through-flow" operation. Most printheads shoot ink by delivering a pressure pulse down a channel that ejects ink from a small nozzle at the end.

16) viscom frankfurt 2008: “Meet the Professionals“

The short development cycle in industrial inkjet printing opens up new dimensions and lucrative markets for manufacturers and designers. To facilitate the exchange between exhibitors and visitors, professionals from the fields of printing, materials and inks will meet for discussions around the topic of industrial inkjet printing at the stand in the special show section each day of the fair at 3 p.m. (Saturday at 2 p.m.). On 30 October, the motto will be “Sustainability: production, application and disposal“, as environmental compatibility is also a major concern in industrial inkjet printing. For this reason, inks, materials and systems are to be tuned into one another at the production stage already, so as not to present health or environmental risks. In addition to processing, the disposal of both consumables and of the final product plays an important part. In this context, the special show at viscom frankfurt 2008 will presents examples of products in which health and environmental factors have been taken into account to the highest possible degree. On the second day, 31 October, he discussion starting at 3 p.m. is to deal with “Durability: production cycles, materials and processes“. And on the viscom Saturday the subject will be “Practicability: feasibility versus economic efficiency “.
