Publishing Company: CREACT, Spain; editor in chief: Susanne Aschoff

Thursday, 23. September 2004

Dear readers,

in just a few days, the doors will be open from 28th September to 3rd October for the visitors rush to the Koelnmesse exhibition grounds. Around 1,600 suppliers – over three per cent more than at the previous fair in 2002 – exhibit their products and services, and more than 60 per cent of them come from abroad. About 160,000 visitors from every continent will be flocking to the exhibition grounds. The leading global fair for imaging technology and imaging applications is indeed a dynamic and spectacular event. Between the 1,600 suppliers, a host of new exhibitors from the IT and telecommunications industry is on hand. A growth area at photokina is the range of imaging software, which is concentrated in hall 10.1 for the first time.

Another area – in halls 10.2 and 14 – will be a Mecca for image and media professionals. Specialized suppliers for professionals in the imaging sector present their products and services. Hall 14 is devoted to professional photo and imaging technology, including professional cameras, studio technology, lab technology and finishing, digital publishing, and large format printing. Here too, the range of products is comprehensive, as nearly the entire world's leading suppliers are highlighting their latest innovations. An extensive supporting program that includes specific topics for every visitor target group – retailers, users and interested consumers – rounds off the attractions at photokina.

2) Onyx -Integration of PANTONE® Color Libraries

Onyx Graphics, a leader in large format digital printing solutions, is pleased to announce the addition of PANTONE® color libraries to all standard Onyx® 6.0 Workflow products. This added capability offers Onyx users a fully automated PANTONE Color function, which saves operators time by eliminating manual input of color definitions, thereby reducing inaccuracies in the final output and increasing efficiency of the printing process. The libraries are available now at no cost to registered Onyx 6.0 users via the free AutoUpdate system. With PANTONE Color definitions incorporated into your Onyx 6.0 RIP, you can easily process PostScript or PDF print jobs containing named PANTONE spot colors. The Onyx RIP will automatically match output to the PANTONE Colors as closely as is possible on each profiled media. The PANTONE Color capability extends to all printers supported by standard Onyx 6.0. The update for PANTONE Color capability is available now at no cost to registered users of Onyx Graphics standard workflow products including Onyx RIPCenterTM, Onyx PosterShop®, and Onyx ProductionHouseTM Version 6.0. The PANTONE Color Libraries are not available for any OEM or co-branded versions. Onyx users can access the free update via the on-line AutoUpdate System. 3) Noritsu presents Mytis-1 at photokina

The enterprise Noritsu Koki, based near Osaka/Japan, will unveil its new large format printer Mytis-1 to a broad public at photokina in hall 14.1, booth G 21/J 10. The most prominent features of the Mytis-1 are the high quality, the tear resistance, and weather ability of the large size prints when placed outdoor. All operations can be done in a one-step process. Mytis is an abbreviation for "Multi – Yield Transfer Inkjet System". It consists of three units connected with each other: the inkjet printer, the heating unit, and the loop-station, which serves as interim memory. Mytis-1 uses a proprietary method for creating prints. The fluorine layer protects the surface of Mytis-1-prints like a plastic wrap, so there is no need for lamination after the printing operation. This is possible because of a special material like a film that is available in various kinds. At the beginning, Noritsu Deutschland offers two kinds of White Vision Film, matte and glossy, and as third variant an opaque Backlit Vision in rolls. A wide variety of different sizes is available. The maximum print size is 1230 mm allowing a white margin of 5 mm on each side. The lowest advance length is 600 mm when setting the automatic mode and 200 mm when using the manual mode. The system Mytis-1 is equipped with Epson piezo printing heads. Two sets of six different colors are necessary to run the system.

15) Alcan: New KAPA°plast format

Alcan Composites scores well in the market segment of rigid substrates with a wide range of easy-to-handle indoor and outdoor boards available in the field of lightweight, rigid foam and aluminum composite materials. Now the company launched a new KAPA°plast lightweight format. It is a high-quality polyurethane foam core, which is extremely rigid, warp-resistant and suitable for the use of solvent-based inks. Beside a much improved ink adhesion, the primer coat also guarantees a faster absorption of the UV-hardening inks at high printing speeds. The use of brilliant white cellulose as the base paper for the PE-coated cellucarton sandwich structure makes the colors of the precision printing appear glossier while lending them more expression. The result is a visibly finer, sharper image, which has convinced both professional traders and numerous LFP printing machine manufacturers visiting the drupa exhibition. Due to the popular request and responded to calls from dealers and LFP users, Alcan Kapa GmbH added the maxi standard size of 3,050 x 1,530 mm board in thicknesses of 5 mm and 10 mm to the company's multi-format KAPA°plast range and is available right now. The Alcan Composites Group will present its branded boards at photokina in a dual role: as proven mounting boards and preferred direct printable sheets in hall 14.1, booth E 028.

16) Continental Grafix: New film-width

Nearly 96 per cent of the self-adhesive window films are supplied in a width of 54 inch. However, it seems that the applications and motives have become bigger as Continental Grafix had to reject several inquiries for large sizes. Therefore, the company offers for the "one-way-vision" products a new width of its self-adhesive window films. This media is now available in 60-inch width. The 60-inch material is perforated with 1540 hole pattern – 1.5 mm hole size with 40 per cent open area. This is also the most demanded perforation pattern because it shows 20 per cent more printable area with unchanged visibility compared to many other mainstream products. It creates more intense images and brighter colors. Fine text and details are clearly visible at close distance. On demand, it is also possible to supply the new width with the perforation pattern 1550 (50 per cent open area). As a matter of course, it is still possible to choose between a paper liner or a polyester liner version for the backing. Material in the new width is available as of mid-October from the warehouse in Germany. Because of using the same base material, the two ABG numbers for films (with and without laminate) for transportation advertising apply are valid to the new width.

21) Mutoh's super wide Phoenix

At VisCom Europe recently held in Paris, Mutoh presented its new super wide-format (3.3 meters) printer concept, called Phoenix. This Printer is Mutoh's first super wide-format digital inkjet product. They developed it as an industrial high-volume printer. Target markets are flexible and rigid outdoor signage (eco-solvent, solvent, UV) and direct textile printing.
