Actual News about Large Format Printing
Distributor: CREACT, Hamburg
2001-25-11
Dear
readers,
Today we
are distributing LFP-Newsletter.com release 8. A lot happened in the industry
since last release. John Crawford, most of you know him as president of the
SGIA, passed away.
OCÉ
bought Gretag Imaging including well known subsidiaries like RasterGraphics and
ONYX Graphics. Kodak bought Encad. What will come next.
But there
is a very positive message to the market, big players believe in this market
and they believe that it still will grow. Otherwise they wouldn’t invest their
money. Also we understand the message: short way communication and information
is the key for success.
So I hope
that again I have collected value information for you and I like to invite you
to send your comments and ideas.
I also
like to invite you to use the LFP-Newsletter.com as your public relation tool.
Whenever you like to tell people around the world what’s new in your company,
send a mail to Redaktion@LFP-Newsletter.com. For German new, please use Redaktion@LFP-Newsletter.de.

Industry is looking for new way to drive the market
A number of
printing industry trade organizations admit that a serious problem facing
graphic arts businesses today is the chronic shortage of qualified employees.
To address this issue, Women In Production (WIP), Manhattan, recently invited
Gregory S. D’Amico Ph.D., director of New York University’s School of Graphic
Communications, Management, and Technology, to lead a roundtable discussion
focusing on how to obtain and retain bright, motivated, and loyal employees.
The program was the occasion for WIP’s Oct. 18, luncheon, held at the
Metropolitan Hotel in Manhattan. Dr. D’Amico opened the forum by pointing out
that educators are not framing graphic communications as a viable career path,
when, in fact, they should be encouraging students to explore the idea. “High
school advisors are not advising students of the possibilities or opportunities
in commercial printing or graphic communications,” he said. “The printing
industry does not have a (public relations) videotape to send to high schools
and colleges. Nobody is promoting the industry.” This also was the content of a
discussion leading suppliers have had recently during a meeting of the Digital
Committee of ESMA, in Düsseldorf, Germany. The idea is that suppliers should
set up standards, trainings, a kind of common marketing, etc. The committee is
lead by Thomas Poetz, CEO of 3P-inktextiles. If you like to know more what ESMA
is doing in Europe and how ESMA can support your business, contact him via
email ThomasPoetz@3P-Inktextiles.com

IAB Publishes Glossary Of Terms
The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) has
published the new "IAB Glossary of Interactive Advertising Terms."
IAB president and CEO Robin Webster authored the glossary. Several years ago,
Webster was responsible for the first glossary issued by CASIE, a coalition of
the Association of American Advertising Agencies and the Association of
National Advertisers. The IAB Glossary of Interactive Advertising Terms will
continue to evolve as the industry changes and grows. Containing technical,
measurement and business terms, it was amassed with the assistance of a broad
base of expert advisors from advertising agencies, technology providers,
publishers and research companies and will be periodically updated by the
group.

Improving multicolour printing
Improving
quality in multicolor printing was the focus of this year’s Research Conference
sponsored by the International Association of Research Organizations for the
Printing, Information, and Communication Industries (IARIGAI). An
international, nonprofit association, IARIGAI has been hosting research
conferences since 1951 for members to present and discuss research results on
operations from prepress to finishing. This year’s conference, Advances in
Color Reproduction, was hosted by the Quebec Institute of Graphic
Communications (ICGQ), an IARIGAI member. Over 50 experts from a dozen
countries met in Montreal from September 9–12, 2001, to discuss new techniques
for controlling, assessing, and monitoring the quality of color reproduction in
different printing processes. New methods of quality control were described,
and new advances in techniques for color adaptation and gamut compression,
color gamut control, and color management were presented.

ROCHESTER,
N.Y., and SAN DIEGO,CA November 15, 2001 - Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE: EK)
announced today that it will acquire ENCAD, Inc. a leading manufacturer and
pioneer of wide-format inkjet printers, for approximately $25 million. The purchase
price will be paid in Kodak stock or, under certain circumstances and at
Kodak's option, in cash. ENCAD will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kodak.
The acquisition makes Kodak one of the top three sellers of wide-format inkjet
products, a $2.4 billion output market growing at approximately 15% annually.
Based on Kodak projections and industry estimates, the transaction is expected
to contribute to earnings beginning in 2003.
Kodak's expansion in the fast-growth, large-format display segment is another
example of the company's involvement in and influence on infoimaging-the $225
billion industry created by the convergence of images and information
technology. Infoimaging comprises three closely- related imaging markets:
devices, such as wide-format inkjet printers, infrastructure and services /
media, such as the inks and output capabilities enabled by this acquisition.
Kodak expects the transaction will close early 2002, pending receipt of
regulatory clearances and ENCAD shareholder approval. The merger agreement
contains customary closing conditions and termination rights in favor of each
party under certain circumstances.

Gretag, Professional Imaging Division Acquired by Océ N.V.
SAN JOSE, Calif., Gretag Imaging Group Inc. and
Océ N.V. a major supplier of Professional Document Systems, have reached an agreement
on Océ’s acquisition of Gretag’s Professional Imaging Division, composed of
Raster Graphics, Onyx Graphics, Cymbolic Sciences and ANAgraph. This Division
develops, manufactures and sells products for wide format color inkjet and
photo laser printing, including raster image processors (RIPs), for indoor as
well as outdoor applications.
Under the agreement Océ will purchase the shares of Raster Graphics, Inc. (USA)
as well as the business-related assets of Raster Graphics’ subsidiaries in
Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany. Raster Graphics, Inc. (USA) is the
holding company for the Professional Imaging Division.
As Gretag Professional Imaging Division has a strong position in the Large
Format Digital Printing market, the acquisition will greatly strengthen Océ’s
presence in terms of technology and distribution outlets in this strategically
important and fast-growing market. This market, called Display Graphics within
the Océ organization, includes products that enable the production of color graphics
in large formats. Typical applications include trade show graphics, banners,
and bus shelter posters, backlit displays in airports, point of sales graphics
in shops, fleet graphics on trucks or buses, digital photo enlargements, etc.
The customer groups of both Océ and the Professional Imaging Division
complement each other to a large degree. Océ maintains a strong position among
blueprinters, copy shops and in-house printing departments. The Professional
Imaging Division has a strong presence among digital printers, photo labs,
screenprinters and sign makers. Once the merger is finalized, the Gretag
Professional Imaging Division will be known as Océ Display Graphics Systems,
which will be part of Océ’s Wide Format Printing Systems strategic business unit.
Rak Kumar will continue to manage the new Océ Display Graphics Systems
organization as its CEO.

Where the market is going, some investigations done by IT Strategies
The well
known consulting and research company I.T. Strategies these days launched some
new market researches which can be found in total at their homepage. Here are
some of the items they address:
IT-Strategies
estimates that worldwide revenues from wide format ink jet and narrow format
ink jet hardware, media and chemistry in 2000 were $27 billion increasing to
more than $40 billion by 2005. This represents a compounded annual growth rate
(CAGR) of 8%. Of this, the largest segment is and will continue to be ink, with
revenues rising from $12.5 billion in 2000 to more than $22 billion in 2005.
Over the
five-year forecast period, the largest share of the revenue goes to the narrow
format ink jet market with total revenues for hardware, media and ink of more
than $23 billion in 2000 growing to almost $33 billion by 2005, a CAGR of 7%.
By contrast, the wide format market revenues for hardware, media and ink will
grow from $3.6 billion in 2000 to almost $7.5 billion by 2005, a CAGR of 15%.
With an estimated installed base in 2005 of 167 million narrow format ink jet
printers, revenues work out to be about $196 per printer. This compares to the
wide format market with an estimated installed base of just under 500,000,
yielding approximately $16,000 per printer.
These
findings are cited from I.T. Strategies' Worldwide Narrow Format Ink Jet
Forecast 2001 and I.T. Strategies Wide Format Digital Color Printing Forecast
2001. I.T. Strategies defines the narrow format ink jet market as printers
up to but not including 24" wide. It would include products such as the HP
7XX and 9XX, Epson Stylus Color 7XX and 9XX, Lexmark Z series, Canon S600/800.
I. T. Strategies defines the wide format ink jet market as printers greater
than and including 24". It would include products such as the HP 3000,
Epson 9000, RGI Arizona.
There are
many industrial printing markets that can benefit from digital printing, but
some are going to be more accessible than others. Users spend over $320 billion
worldwide for print in the packaging market annually. Given the inefficiencies
of analog printing for portions of this market, it will become one of the first
markets most receptive to digital printing. Digital Color Printing Opportunities
in the Packaging Market is one of a series of reports describing digital
printing opportunities in industrial printing markets. Its goal is to provide
readers with an analytical review of the industry as well as to suggest ways to
enter the market. Among its objectives are: · To describe the dynamics of the
packaging market · To size and segment the packaging market · To gauge the
opportunity for digital printing in the packaging market · To suggest possible
ways of market entry · To profile key digital printing companies targeting the
packaging market.

Color-Breakthrough
with Pigment Inks
For very longtime
we believed Inkjet images were only realy bright when printed with Dye-Inks.
For that reason the company Arkwright (European office in the Netherlands) was
awarded the innovation price at IRGA in USA for two products that will realy
lift-off the pigment-ink printing. They introduced their latest Backlit Film
and Fotopaper, and it's a hit right from the start!!
1.The new PHOTOPAPER with pigmented
ink gives a 40% bigger colour-gamut as any earlier product, and can be used all
on Bubblejet (HP, Encad, etc) and Piezo(Epson, Roland) type of systems(of
course also dye inks). Moreover, the product can be laminated cold, warm and
(back from the future) HOT lamination with enormous bond. It is the first super
full colour solution for pigment-ink images. You need only ONE ink and ONE
paper! It's quickdry, and believe it: it's 30% cheaper as other Photopapers.
2. The new Outdoor BACKLIT ist a true
sensation, and is an welcome addition to the range of 5 backlits already in the
product-line of market-leader Arkwright. A benchmark study done by 4 German
companies reveiled the possibillities of the product. It can be used on ALL
INKJET SYSTEMS, and even with pigmented inks it yields an enormous colour gamut
gain.. It is realy sctratchproof, even when soaking wet, and is 100%
outdoor-due-to-last. Finaly waterbased pigment Inkjet has its breakthrough.: No
more Barriers!!
Please
send you enquiries at once, as Arkwright has more year-end offers. Arkwright
products are available via trade-partners only: sales@Arkwright-eur.com
