Dear readers,

here you will find something about interesting innovations and news about Large Format Printing.

1)     FESPA Digital 2011: 80% of floor space filled

With 80% of floor space filled, the exhibition is already larger than the show in 2009, and the remaining floor space is expected to be occupied fast. As a result, visitors are guaranteed the biggest dedicated Digital show yet, with a clear concept, industry-leading exhibitors and a host of the innovative, added-value features now strongly associated with FESPA. With the addition of an extra day, FESPA Digital 2011 will increase its focus on the potential of digital wide format throughout the print value chain. Placing an increased emphasis on print’s role in the marketing mix, the fourth day programme will aim to educate brand owners and advertisers on the innovative ways in which wide-format digital print can play a role in their campaigns. “FESPA Digital 2011 will appeal to many types of visitor, not just established wide-format print service providers”, says Frazer Chesterman, Managing Director, FESPA. “Markets are converging and we’re seeing more commercial offset and digital printers expressing an interest in the ways that wide format can enhance their businesses. This is the show where printers and their customers can come together and see how to overcome obstacles and use print creatively to propel their businesses forward. We want FESPA Digital 2011 to be the springboard that will give visitors the optimism and confidence to take a leap forward in 2011.”

9)     GMG: Proofr.com remote proofing network is now online

GMG officially launched the www.proofr.com Internet platform. The worldwide network of remote proofing locations makes it possible to provide online proofing services in compliance with the GMG quality standards, and can be used from now on. Due to the increasing globalization of the working world, even digital hardcopy proofs today regularly have to be transported over long distances, e.g. by courier, if rapid customer approval is needed. That is an expensive procedure in terms of both money and time. GMG is catering to this situation by introducing its innovative Internet platform called Proofr.com. The working principle is very simple: via an online portal at www.proofr.com, interested users can order a color-accurate contract proof in GMG quality, and select a Proofr partner in their area for the job. This partner then produces the proof in the recipient's vicinity, sending it out within a matter of hours. The PayPal online payment system is used for payment.

12) Inca Digital: America Digitaal Druk bring hospital wall to life

America Digitaal Druk, The Netherlands produced wall panels illustrating a tropical forest for Emma's Children's Hospital (part of University Hospital Amsterdam) following the renovation of their wards. The biggest challenge was to perfectly match the panels to create a wall that would come to life when you walk past it. This was achieved with the Inca Eagle 44 by printing on to 18 two-part lenticular panels designed so that, when viewed from slightly different angles, the images appear to move. These panels were then laminated onto Dibond before being mounted in the hospital. The wall has a stunning effect and has helped to create a tranquil place in which patients, parents and visitors can relax as well as creating a pleasant environment in which to work.

23) Neschen: Better than winning the lottery

A stem cell donation is a donation of life – but it does cost time and money. To emphasize its social commitment, Neschen AG has therefore granted fully paid leave to its employee Paul Randall in September for peripheral stem cell collection. Thus it has made possible the transplantation saving the life of a person suffering from leukaemia. "Our employee Paul Randall has given a leukaemia patient the chance to a second life", says Dr. Norbert Dieterich, CEO of Neschen AG in Bückeburg. "Given the chance of one in a million for finding a matching donor, this almost verges on a miracle. In order to support a swift transplantation, we have immediately guaranteed him continuation of payment for the working time lost due to the stem cell collection." For peripheral stem cell collection, for five days the donor receives an endogenous hormone-like substance (growth factor G-CSF), which the body produces, e.g., during febrile infections. This drug stimulates the proliferation of stem cells and increases their numbers in the flowing blood. These can then be collected from the blood using a special process. Major advantages of this method over extraction from the bone marrow include elimination of the need for anaesthesia and performance in an outpatient setting. About once every 45 minutes a person contracts leukaemia: The only chance for survival: stem cell transplantation. The chances for finding a "genetic twin", however, are extremely low – comparable to a lottery win. In order to allow more and more people to enjoy this grand prize, the DKMS (Deutsche Knochenmarkspenderdatei gemeinnützige Gesellschaft mbH) registers voluntary donors in a file comprising the tissue type (human leukocyte antigens = HLAs). A stem cell or bone marrow donation is possible only if the HLAs of the donor and the recipient match exactly. The more people have their HLA determined and registered in the donor file, the greater are the chances of finding a suitable donor.
